Portugal, Estoril, June 2010

Invitation

What will the future hold

In 1979 Portugal successfully organized the first International Symposium for Processed Tomatoes in Evora, which was the precursor for the many Tomato Congress’s and Symposia which have since been held every two years in virtually all the continents of the Globe.

We now have the pleasure of inviting you, to the World Tomato Congress and ISHS Symposium which will take place in Estoril Portugal in June 2010.

In these intervening 30 years the “World” of Tomatoes has changed dramatically, yields per Hectare have grown nearly threefold, Global production doubled from 20 M tons to 40 M Tons.

Recent events raise the issue as to whether the models which have served us in the past will continue to do so in the future.

In an effort to look forward over the next 30 years we will over the congress sessions examine each of the commercial steps which takes place from Growing to final Consumption.

In a the days when we will meet we hope to have the opportunity to show you something of our beautiful country and to invite Speakers who will help us to promote discussions which will lead us to better understand this business in which we are actively involved and to further its sustained development.

We look forward to greet you in Estoril.

For the Local Organizing Committee
Martin Stilwell

The Estoril Congress Center is located at the heart of the beautiful and glamorous seaside resort of Estoril and Cascais, just a short driving distance from Lisbon Airport. The Estoril Congress Center (ECC), certified as a Green Venue by Green Globe International, is the European leader and foremost MI venue in Sustainable Business Tourism.

Winner of the “Excellency in innovation and Architecture Quality Prize” and “Best Tourism Development” in 2002, amongst other awards, the Estoril Congress Center is located on a very prominent tourist site known as the Estoril Coast, next to the famous Casino, granted with the surrounding gardens and sea views.

The main purposes for the design were: specialized meeting facility areas with high flexibility usage and transparency towards outdoor views and sunlight. Opened in 2001, the Estoril Congress Center, was design by the distinguished architect office Regino Cruz Arquitectos, who also designed other renown meeting and event facilities such as Atlântico Pavilion, Algarve Congress Center, Faro Stadium, Parque das Cidades Congress Center, etc.

Due to its modern design, equipment and structural orientation, the ECC building is extremely energy and water efficient. Still a few changes in energy equipment and waste control were applied in 2007 and, in concordance with our 2008 policy commitment to Sustainable Business and Services, a plan to change other equipment and energy resources has been development for implementation in the upcoming years.
